Subak Updates
Introducing our Global Fellows Cohort 👋
We’re so excited to announce that we’ve recently been joined by five new Fellows in the UK! You can read about them, and their projects, in our latest blog.
We will soon also be joined by a number of Fellows associated with Subak Australia, so keep an eye on their LinkedIn to be the first to meet them 🇦🇺
Fellowship Applications Open
We have also just opened applications for our Global Fellowships. Subak Fellows receive £10k/AUD $20k to undertake an innovative climate data project, as well as joining our global community and receiving hands-on Subak support. Applications are open until the 22nd April.
Whilst we are currently primarily looking for projects in the electric vehicles and power plant fields, we encourage anyone to apply. You can read more about the projects we are particularly interested in supporting, in line with our Data Cooperative build, in this blog.

Introducing Cohort One in TechCrunch
In case you missed it, Subak’s Cohort One accelerator announcement hit the headlines of TechCrunch recently. Subak member, Jules Caron, co-founder of Project Canopy, was quoted:
“A few months ago, Project Canopy was just a couple of guys with a pdf. Joining Subak is really our watershed moment. Subak’s funding and support will allow us to put data at the heart of decision-making for the Congo Basin rainforest — the key to global climate change mitigation.”
Wind and solar reach record highs, but there’s still much to do
Ember’s report (shared globally including in BBC and Reuters, and even by Elon Musk), the Global Electricity Review, found that 50 countries have now crossed the 10% wind and solar landmark, with 7 new countries in 2021 hitting the milestone for the first time.
However, the report also found that electricity demand rebounded: Coal power rose 9% in 2021 to 10,042 TWh, the biggest percentage rise on record since at least 1985. To be on a pathway that keeps global heating to 1.5 degrees, wind and solar need to sustain high growth rates of 20% every year to 2030.
Why carbon taxation could be a simple, fair and transformative policy instrument
Autonomy’s latest research, reported in the Independent, finds that a global carbon taxation and dividend scheme, if tuned properly, would effectively end extreme poverty globally. They find that this would also serve to lift more than a billion people above more ambitious poverty lines of $3.2 and $5.5 a day. 3.8bn people would see their income increase by at least 10% with a global carbon dividend scheme.

🤔 Stat of the month: $1.1 trillion. TransitionZero’s analysis finds $1.1 trillion per year or 10% of conventional BF-BOF steel production is at risk of becoming stranded assets by 2030. You can read more about this in their latest research.
