Subak Updates
2022 in reflect 💚
In our last newsletter of 2022, we wanted to highlight just a handful of the key achievements, milestones and exciting bits of news from the past year at Subak.
Completed two accelerator startup cohorts across our two nodes in UK & Australia 🇬🇧 🇦🇺
Grew to a team of 10 in the UK and 4 in Australia 💚
Ran the inaugural 2-day Subak Climate Summit in London 🚀
Launched our global climate Data Catalogue and grew to 25k datasets by end of December 📊
Launched a £20m fundraise to help us establish a global network of climate data centres-of-excellence 🌍
Supported 20 individuals around the world working on climate data through our Fellowship programme 🤝
Accelerator Cohort 1 wrap up the nine month programme 🚀
In November, we wrapped-up both our European and APAC Cohort 1 of the Subak Accelerator programme. Our Europe Cohort met in-person at our London office for a 2 day bootcamp to close the programme, culminating in a graduation showcase.
Since March, these teams have attended workshops, benefited from top-tier mentor support, engaged with experts in business, tech, data and impact and enjoyed 1-to-1 sessions with the Subak team. They’ve also conducted skills-sharing sessions for other members of the community, and received technical advisory support from our partners at Snyk. We’re so proud of the progress the climate not-for-profit organisations have made during the programme.

Our next round of applications for the programme will be opening in January. Register interest here to be notified when they open and be kept up to date with application information.

Climate TRACE releases detailed publicly available global inventory of greenhouse gas emissions 📊
In November, Climate TRACE published its latest data release at COP27. Congratulations to Subak Member and founding member at Climate TRACE, TransitionZero, for playing a central role in the data release.
The release shares highly granular global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data at the facility-level, as well as country and sector-level data for 2021. Explore the new data, including information on 70K+ highly-emitting individual sources worldwide here.

Solar generation helped avoid at least US$34 billion in seven Asian countries in the first half of 2022 🌏
New research by Subak member Ember finds that while gas and coal prices soared in 2022, the growth of solar power across China, India, Japan, South Korea, Viet Nam, the Philippines and Thailand helped avoid using costly fossil fuels.
The contribution of solar generation in seven key Asian countries – China, India, Japan, South Korea, Viet Nam, the Philippines and Thailand – avoided potential fossil fuel costs of approximately US$34 billion from January to June 2022. This is equal to 9% of total fossil fuel costs these countries incurred over the same period in 2022. Read more in the Straits Times.

💻 State of Climate Action in 2022 from Climate Action Tracker highlights action towards mitigating climate change split out by sector.
🎧 Killian Daly from Cohort 1 Member EnergyTag speaks on the 2Tokens podcast about how hourly energy tagging can change what it means to be green.
🧵 This thread of threads from COP27 reviews the good, the bad & the ugly in relation to key aspects of COP27, by some of the most astute observers of the process.
🔎 Data Catalogue Spotlight: Subak Member AimHi Earth recently published their first dataset on climate misinformation and misconceptions. The data serves as a barometer of the state of understanding of the climate and nature crises, both in organisations and more broadly, in the public. The IPCC noted in their April 2022 report that undoing climate misconceptions is essential to disrupt business-as-usual and bring about systemic change, and AimHi Earth’s dataset can be a first step for anyone doing so.
☀️ At COP27, world leaders launched the Forests and Climate Leaders’ Partnership, committing to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030. 26 countries and the European Union – which together account for over 33% of the world’s forests and nearly 60% of the world’s GDP – make up the partnership.
